What Does the iPad Offer Sports Fans?

By now, you found out that the reason the Internet broke yesterday was because Apple used an app to stop the world from spinning until everyone took the time to fawn over their new technological creation, the iPad (which, by the way, has instantly become fodder for feminine hygiene jokes — and MadTV’s iPad skit from a couple years ago has found new life, as well). As soon as Steve Jobs finished showing the media his new toy, the media began churning out story after story about the new gadget. They dissected, speculated, complained, praised, and posed thousands of questions.

Kneel before the iPad.

Kneel before the iPad.

I checked out the first official video on the iPad, and although it just seems like a giant iPhone, it does have some cool features and is intriguing in a few ways. The only problem is that I have a laptop computer already, so I’m not about to run out and drop $500 on a shiny new toy like that. But I did wonder what this new gadget offered sports fans, so I did a quick Google search today, and I found one video clip in particular that illustrated its value to fans. It’s simply a walkthrough of reading SI on the iPad, as told by editor Terry McDonald; he shows readers how each feature contains several embedded photo galleries, how they can easily access and change their fantasy football lineups, and access real time scores of the day’s games. Of course, the iPad is primed to revolutionize the publishing industry and how people read any magazine, not just sports issues, but there’s definitely some interesting features, and I encourage you to take a look at them below.

There’s no doubt in my mind that the iPad will eventually come out with dozens, if not hundreds of sports-specific applications for die hards, so this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Love them or hate them (and I readily admit that I lean toward the “hate” side because of trendiness, costliness, and pretentiousness), the fact of the matter is that Apple makes some innovative technology.
