27pitches Remembers the 2009 NFL Season

Any list of stories from the 2009 season has to start with the Saints.

Since we are now entering the heart of scouting season with draft preparations heating up and free agency kicking off on March 5th and Sean getting all types of hyped up because baseball season is on the horizon (whoopty-doo), I figured no better time than now to take a look back at the NFL season that reached its culmination three weeks ago with the Saints stealing the spotlight from Peyton Manning. In keeping with the whole 27 theme (another baseball reference that makes me want to club baby seals), I decided to rehash the top 27 storylines from this past season and even more daring I tried to actually rank them in order of importance.

Right now, in a hotel room in Indianapolis, Al Davis is sweating bullets accompanied by a grin reminiscent of the Joker. But he’s not sweating out of fear or exhaustion, even though walking from his bed to the mini-bar very well may have tired the old man out, but in sheer excitement over the week ahead. Yes, the Super Bowl is over and the next important date on the NFL calendar is now upon us: the NFL Scouting Combine, otherwise known as Al Davis’ personal menagerie of miscues.

D’oh, Canada

Rafalski got the Americans going early, and Miller shut the door late.

I’m not breaking any news here by saying that last night’s hockey game between the Americans and Canadians was an epic showdown between two of the biggest rivals in any sport in these Olympics. But if all you did was hear about the momentous upset instead of actually witnessing it yourself, I honestly feel bad for you because it truly was a thing of beauty; the best hockey game, other than the three Devils Stanley Cup-clinching victories, that I’ve ever witnessed in my life.

Taking the Good with the Bad

With the 2009 season behind us, the hot topic among NFL people and those who cover the league is the looming labor showdown between the players and owners that will force teams to play without a salary cap next season and could ultimately result in the owners locking out the players in 2011. I previously wrote about how ridiculous it would be for the owners and the players to not come to some sort of compromise considering that the league has never been healthier, but regardless of what we as sports fans think or want, a lockout and a 2011 without football is becoming increasingly more likely as the time ticks by and absolutely no progress has been made in negotiations.
