Shallow Pool All But Dried Up

March 5th was a day that everyone at all levels of the NFL had circled on their calendars for the past two years. It was a day that everyone knew was imminent, yet no one wanted to actually see because of the ramifications associated with it. As soon as Thursday turned into Friday, there was no longer a collective bargaining agreement and the NFL was in its first uncapped year since 1993.

Let the Feeding Frenzy Commence

Shortly after midnight, Peppers will be a very happy, and rich, man.

Midnight stands just about an hour away and as soon as the clock strikes 12, expect a fast and furious free agency period to begin. With an uncapped year being ushered in simultaneously, this year’s class is a watered-down version of what it could have been had we not run into the labor strife that has now befallen us.

27pitches Remembers the 2009 NFL Season

Any list of stories from the 2009 season has to start with the Saints.

Since we are now entering the heart of scouting season with draft preparations heating up and free agency kicking off on March 5th and Sean getting all types of hyped up because baseball season is on the horizon (whoopty-doo), I figured no better time than now to take a look back at the NFL season that reached its culmination three weeks ago with the Saints stealing the spotlight from Peyton Manning. In keeping with the whole 27 theme (another baseball reference that makes me want to club baby seals), I decided to rehash the top 27 storylines from this past season and even more daring I tried to actually rank them in order of importance.

Let’s Get Physicals

As scary as it seems, Davis isn

Right now, in a hotel room in Indianapolis, Al Davis is sweating bullets accompanied by a grin reminiscent of the Joker. But he’s not sweating out of fear or exhaustion, even though walking from his bed to the mini-bar very well may have tired the old man out, but in sheer excitement over the week ahead. Yes, the Super Bowl is over and the next important date on the NFL calendar is now upon us: the NFL Scouting Combine, otherwise known as Al Davis’ personal menagerie of miscues.

Can you believe it? I certainly can’t. Time flies when you’re maintaining a website you created. But alas, we made it to the one year mark, and there are lots of people to thank for helping us get to this point.

Taking the Good with the Bad

"You

With the 2009 season behind us, the hot topic among NFL people and those who cover the league is the looming labor showdown between the players and owners that will force teams to play without a salary cap next season and could ultimately result in the owners locking out the players in 2011. I previously wrote about how ridiculous it would be for the owners and the players to not come to some sort of compromise considering that the league has never been healthier, but regardless of what we as sports fans think or want, a lockout and a 2011 without football is becoming increasingly more likely as the time ticks by and absolutely no progress has been made in negotiations.

You’re in Good Hands with These Guys

Just like Michael Griffin here, no one can keep up with Johnson.

n case you haven’t been paying attention since the 70’s, the NFL has now become, without a doubt, a passing league. Running games have not become nonexistent and they are still important to maintain leads and establish some semblance of balance, but it is through the passing game that points are scored and games are won. With this becoming apparent, it has become increasingly more important for teams to try and pinpoint a legitimate #1 receiver to base that vital passing game around.

Brandon Hits the PA Airwaves

Last Wednesday, when most of NJ and PA were hit by the mother of all blizzards, Brandon and I were the beneficiaries of a rare snow day, as our place of employment shut down business activities. Brandon’s buddy, Dan Wing, was not so lucky, and had to head on into work to run his talk show over at PA’s WBCB 1490. However, this presented Brandon with an opportunistic guest spot on the show to discuss the Super Bowl and the NFL offseason.

The Hall Calls a Few Wrong Numbers

Not a person on this planet can argue with rice

One of the biggest events during the week leading up to the Super Bowl is the selection of that year’s Hall of Fame class. It is the highest honor that a former athlete can be rewarded with and because of the prestige associated with it the responsibility of the writers who select the players to be enshrined should not be taken lightly. But every year there are some glaring omissions and this year was no different.

Another Asset in the Fight Against Concussions

m_skull_text

As many of you know from reading this blog, I am a strong ambassador for individuals, companies, and products that combat concussions. It’s one of the rare crossover topics between my professional life, personal life, and this blog. Since I write for a neurology publication, I often receive press releases and offers that focus on this issue, and occasionally I will find information on a study or product that I think warrants more exposure.
