
It’s late and I am exhausted but some things cannot wait. Tonight, sports lovers who were privy to what was taking place in Detroit got to witness sports history. I’m not talking about events that make players, coaches, fans, referees, or, in this case, umpires, famous. No, no, I’m talking about those intersections of sports and drama that make people and places infamous.

The Detroit Tigers came so heartbreakingly close to reaching the playoffs last year that it makes me cringe when I think about how their fans must have reacted to a one-game playoff, extra-inning defeat at the hands of the Minnesota Twins (which was one of the best “regular season” games of all time).

As you are well-aware by now, the Detroit Lions broke the leagues longest winless streak when they beat the Washington Redskins on Sunday to reside in the win column for the first time since December 23, 2007. I don’t know a single person, except for maybe the Redskins fans, that wasn’t happy to see them finally get off the snide.
