The offenses in Sunday’s game have gotten most of the attention heading into Sunday’s game and for good reason. The quarterbacks are arguably the two best in the league and both have been spoiled with a plethora of dangerous options with which to work. But faced with the task of keeping these explosive attacks in check, it will be the defenses in my opinion that will determine the outcome of this game. I don’t expect either defense to be particularly stout or force an overabundance of punts, but causing a filed goal as opposed to a touchdown in the red zone or giving their respective offenses as good a field position as possible will be keys in giving their team the upper hand. And of course there is always the game-changing turnover that could determine this year’s NFL champ.

Inches away. That is what football’s final four has in common. Each and every one of them is inches away from what every player plays the game for, except of course JaMarcus Russell because it’s painfully obvious he only plays the game for the money that he is stealing from Al Davis’ pocket every week, but can you blame him?

This is the week where we will see whether momentum rears its ugly head or if resting your players to get them healthy for a playoff run is truly worth it. The teams coming off of wins all played exceptionally well last week, except of course for ‘Zona’s defense, and will be carrying that momentum into foreign stadiums. The teams that should be most concerned with their lack of momentum are both #1 seeds, as Indianapolis decided to shut it down two weeks before the end of the season even though they were on the verge of becoming only the second team to ever finish the 16-game regular season undefeated. The Saints didn’t take that route and instead gave everything they had to try and finish undefeated, only to be stunned by the Cowboys at home and then suffered an inexplicable loss to the Buccaneers in the Superdome before completely giving up on their final game and not even attempting to play many of their key players.

I am a big fan of the intro section because it gives me time to warm my readers up for the meat of the column, maybe drop a joke or two or simply grease the wheels before just throwing stuff out there. But I’ve had a long week, so no intro for you. Sometimes the intro is the best part of my posts, so I know there are some of you craving more, and I will gladly satisfy that request a little later as I am also preparing a post about my boy Jay Cutler (he’s awesome). So, without further adieu, here are the games of the week and my upset pick.

This posting comes a little bit later than normal and I would like to apologize to all of my loyal readers. I have been a little busy working on a top secret project for a major provider of football information. But, I am now back to our beloved site here and I am ready to riff on all of the goings on in yesterdays games. So without further adieu here are the 8 things that I saw yesterday that I think everyone should recognize as well.

The first quarter of the season will end for most teams after this weekend’s games. A lot of teams like to look at the season, like the game itself, in four quarters. After the first quarter they gauge where they are at and then adjust moving forward. After this weekend’s games, a lot of teams will have a better measure of where they stand and what they’ll have to do to improve going into the second month of the season.

Whew! Yesterday was quite the day for football as we saw a legend create magic once more, a team get their first win in over a year, complete offensive futility, and much more interesting developments. There are some surprising undefeated teams as well as a few shockers that remain defeated.

Last night, the Dolphins dominated in every phase of the game. They ran at will, they moved the chains through the air when necessary, and they contained the Colts offense for the most part. And yet, they still lost the game.

Yesterday’s games were supposed to clear things up a bit, leave teams knowing what they had to work on and where they were heading, for better or worse. So exactly how clear are things in the NFL after the first two Sundays? Well, to put it bluntly, not very.
