We have turned the corner and are now heading down the home stretch toward kickoff of the biggest event in the American sporting landscape. The NCAA tournament might be the most exciting, the World Series draped in history and Americana, the Stanley Cup doused with tradition, but nothing compares to the Super Bowl in terms of extravagance and exorbitance. Former coaches and players come out of the woodwork to conduct interviews and promote whatever endeavors they have embarked upon since they last stepped foot on a field and celebrities descend on the host city attending the multitude of lavish parties being thrown throughout the week and gallivanting around town trying to be seen by anyone and everyone with a camera and a credential.

Sunday’s battle between Peyton Manning and Drew Brees is shaping up to be one of the greatest quarterback duels in Super Bowl history. It’s true that Manning-Favre would have been better historically, but this game isn’t too shabby and I don’t think it’ll disappoint. Manning is already being considered by many to be the greatest quarterback in NFL history and Brees has been moving up record lists at a rapid rate and isn’t showing any signs of slowing down anytime soon. I haven’t heard one media person yet say they don’t expect this game to be a barnburner. For the first time since 1992 (I think) both #1 seeds advanced to the Super Bowl and I truly believe this game will be something special.

Since we are basically halfway through the NFL season, I thought I’d take the time to give out my midseason awards. We all know that it’s not how you start but how you finish, but there are some teams that regardless of how they finish their seasons have been lost. Obviously these awards are subject to change as the season progresses, but as of right now, this is how I see things.

The most obvious and intriguing storyline this week revolves around Brett Favre returning to his former stomping grounds of Lambeau Field to face off against the team he made his legend with. But I’m not here to harp on the Favre angle, since you’ll get enough of that elsewhere. Contrary to what many media outlets would have you believe, there are other games on this weekend’s slate As well, and many of them figure to be close games. This could be one of the only weeks all year where there are only a limited amount of games pitting a good team against a god-awful one

This posting comes a little bit later than normal and I would like to apologize to all of my loyal readers. I have been a little busy working on a top secret project for a major provider of football information. But, I am now back to our beloved site here and I am ready to riff on all of the goings on in yesterdays games. So without further adieu here are the 8 things that I saw yesterday that I think everyone should recognize as well.

The first quarter of the season will end for most teams after this weekend’s games. A lot of teams like to look at the season, like the game itself, in four quarters. After the first quarter they gauge where they are at and then adjust moving forward. After this weekend’s games, a lot of teams will have a better measure of where they stand and what they’ll have to do to improve going into the second month of the season.

Whew! Yesterday was quite the day for football as we saw a legend create magic once more, a team get their first win in over a year, complete offensive futility, and much more interesting developments. There are some surprising undefeated teams as well as a few shockers that remain defeated.

Last night, the Dolphins dominated in every phase of the game. They ran at will, they moved the chains through the air when necessary, and they contained the Colts offense for the most part. And yet, they still lost the game.
